Top 6 Reasons Why I Read

Most people who are writers like to read. Some of our reasons for reading are shared, and some are unique to each of us. Here are my top 6 reasons for cuddling up with a good book:

  1. Honestly, because it’s fun. Reading is a treat for me, something I get to enjoy at the end of a long day. It’s like watching TV, but good for me! Yippee!

  2. To learn more about a particular topic. My current read is the United States Pony Club Manual of Horsemanship…may sound boring, but I’m eating it up! And it’s not just non-fiction that can be educational; fiction is often based on real life and can teach you a thing or two about other cultures and time periods (way more fun than reading a history textbook, if you ask me).

  3. To find out what happens next. Like all humans, I’m a sucker for a good story, especially one that keeps me turning pages. It’s like the feeling of hitting “next episode” on Netflix. Except I don’t feel bad about it.

  4. To feel good. I prefer feel-good fiction and memoir with lovable characters, plenty of humor, and a plot line I can get invested in but not be upset or disturbed by. Recent reads in this genre include authors Emily Henry, Beth O’Leary, Bruce Cameron, and Clare Pooley.

  5. To unwind before sleep. This kind of goes along with the last one, but I’ve struggled with insomnia and restlessness at night, and reading has helped me more than anything else. It’s the best way for me to cue my brain for sleep and take my mind off of worries from the day. I read until my eyes are heavy, and then I can usually fall asleep pretty quickly.

  6. To become a better writer. Common writing advice is to read whenever you’re not writing. Imitating the masters is one of the best ways to learn. Just a cherry on top of all the other benefits of reading!
